Topic: Humility
Focus: A new life of peace and prosperity
Psalm 37:11 (NIV) But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.
There is no peace in depression…and prosperity and addiction don’t normally go hand in hand, either. How can it be then, that the scripture about the meek inheriting the land and enjoying peace and prosperity could have something to say to those of us who have struggled with depression and addiction?
When I looked up the word ‘meek’ in Strong’s Concordance, the Hebrew interpretation says ‘meek’ means ‘afflicted, miserable’—with added emphasis on ‘lowly, pious, and modest mind, which prefers to bear injuries rather than return them’.
If you have suffered long in depression and addiction, you may eventually come to a point of surrender and realization that you can’t go on anymore in your affliction or misery. There is no ‘fight’ left in you and you just want to give up. At that place, it is hard to imagine that there could be any future. It is almost impossible to believe that anything good could come out of complete despair.
When we reach the bottom—the place further down in darkness than we have ever been before, it’s hard to see any light at all.
You may have exhausted all of your resources. Credit may be maxed out, friends and family are probably worn out—maybe you’re too ashamed of your failures to ask for more help. Yet the Word of God implies in Psalm 37:11, that the ‘afflicted and miserable’ will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity. Can that be possible?

The impossible becomes possible with God.
It may be a long time since you have known any kind of enjoyment—much less the enjoyment of peace and prosperity. Yet, the Word of God says you can.
It isn’t up to me to explain how or why. I can’t. It isn’t up to you to understand how it can even be true. All you have to be capable of doing is saying to God, “I want that. I am sick of being afflicted and miserable and I want to know what it is to enjoy peace and prosperity. Please set me free today and show me how.”
God can do it for you. People can’t. God alone has the answers you need. He never intended for you to put your trust in people. He wants you to put all of your trust in Him. When you put your trust in people and they fail you, then you think you have a reason to feel depressed and turn to other means to try to get satisfaction.
True and lasting satisfaction only comes from God. Other things that seem to bring satisfaction don’t last.
You have suffered enough. It’s time for a good future to begin. It’s time to start building an inheritance and enjoying the peace and prosperity your life has lacked. Just say it. Say, “God, I want that. I’m sick of being afflicted and miserable and I want to know what it is to enjoy peace and prosperity. Please set me free today and show me how.”
Declaration: I am sick of being afflicted and miserable. God is setting me free and showing me how to enjoy peace and prosperity.
