Focus: Dreams and visions

Hebrews 10:39 (NCV) But we are not of those who turn back and are lost. We are people who have faith and are saved.

I have a white index card folded in half that stands on the counter in my bathroom. It bears the following message in my own handwriting: “But we are not of those who turn back and are lost. We are people who have faith and are saved. Today, I pick myself up again and continue to go after my dream.”

The statement didn’t originate with me. It was something I heard during a message someone was giving somewhere. I decided to ‘claim’ it, by writing it down. As I see it each morning while I’m brushing my teeth, I think about ‘going after my dream’. During that time, I renew my commitment to keep dreaming and making progress. Sometimes I’m tired and hardly awake…but, my day begins with that decision.

If you don’t have a dream, you need to get one. You probably won’t get a dream if you’re not open to getting one or thinking about it. If you’re just going through your days in a dull sense of ‘unexpectation’, nothing is going to change for you and you won’t get a dream.

It works this way:

First, you have to want a dream.
Second, believe having a dream is possible for you.
Third, expect your dream to be revealed—starting now.
Having a dream gives you something to look forward to. A dream or a vision isn’t just some made up fantasy. It can be the truth of what lies ahead for you according to the Spirit of God.

Jesus said to His disciples in John 16:13, “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.” Joel 2:28-29 further confirms “…I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
 Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
 Your old men shall dream dreams,
 Your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants 
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.”

The Word of God makes no mistake in declaring that the Holy Spirit is the revealer of truth—and that God wants us to have dreams and visions. Some people think we shouldn’t try to know the future, but the Word of God is full of prophecy and John 16:13 clearly says the Holy Spirit will show us things to come. Don’t even think about going to fortune teller.  You don’t need some ‘quack’ telling you anything. The Holy Spirit is the Real Deal.

Having a dream is vital to your survival. In Proverbs 29:18, King Solomon said, “Without a vision the people perish”. He didn’t say it would help to have something to look forward to—he said people perish when they don’t have vision.

If you feel like you’re not making the progress you’d like to be making in recovery—get a vision of your future. Get ahold of some kind of mental picture of where it is you’re headed. A dream is like a destination. When you don’t have a destination in mind—you’re really ‘going nowhere’. You could be traveling in circles without even knowing it.

When you have a clear-cut dream, you can list your goals and start checking things off the list as you achieve them. You might be saying, “That sounds too much like ‘work’, and I’m already ‘over-worked’. So, is ‘over-worked’ where you want to stay? I can tell you it’s where you will stay—if you don’t get a dream of something better.

‘Progress’ can be viewed in a lot of ways. It takes determination to make progress in overcoming habits. It takes discipline to train your mind toward healthy thoughts that will keep you out of the pit of depression and despair. Without a dream—you’re just treading water. You might be keeping your head above the surface, but you’re not getting any closer to the shore if you don’t have a dream or destination in mind.

Jesus wouldn’t have given us the specific encouragement of the Holy Spirit’s ability to show us ‘things to come’, if He hadn’t wanted us to have the hope that there was something in there for us. You don’t have to turn back and be lost. You don’t have to keep treading water. You have faith and you can be saved from all you’ve been through. Pick yourself up. Get a dream and go after it.

Declaration: I will find new strength by asking the Holy Spirit to give me a vision of my future. I will see that vision as ‘my dream’ and ‘destination’. I will keep making progress by moving forward with expectation of fresh revelation.
